Lightbulb 25 Fast Facts About Women Around the World

I've recently stumbled across this intriguing article that lists 25 facts about women around the world. Some of the points on the list I didn't even know about. Here's the link to the article if you wanna read it. Here's the list.

Saudi Arabia and the Solomon Islands are just two countries where there are no women in parliament (UNDP, Human Development Report 2004)

3. In 76 countries, less than half the eligible girls are enrolled in secondary school

And when women were given the same level of help, they were found to be more efficient than men, and produced bigger harvests

What's with all these 'fact' threads about women? I can see that some of them are interesting (Saudi's must love coffee), but they seem utterly pointless really. Got stats on men?

Marriage is considered by some as the last legal form of slavery anyway

I am bored and have a few minutes to waste so here goes:

1. 80% of the 50 million people around the world who are affected by violent conflicts, civil wars, disasters, and displacement are women and children

Well the men are dying in those conflicts so that makes sense... still sad.

2. In 2004, 48.8% of the seats held in parliament in Rwanda were held by women. Contrast that to Cuba where 36% of the seats were held by women, and the USA, where 14.3 % of the seats were held by women. Saudi Arabia and the Solomon Islands are just two countries where there are no women in parliament (UNDP, Human Development Report 2004)

Rwanda surprises me.... don't think all those ladies are helping them (j/k)

3. In 76 countries, less than half the eligible girls are enrolled in secondary school

Makes me feel lucky to have been born in the US

4. Women own only 1% of the world’s land

Not surprised there.

5. Approximately three million women in the USA sport tattoos

Only? I wonder what the age bracket is for them....

6. A Saudi Arabian woman can get a divorce if her husband doesn’t give her coffee

And if she goes outside without a head covering she risks death (legally).

7. 43% of Australian marriages end in divorce. of those who remarry, 65% of them will divorce again. By the time you try for marriage number 3, your chance of getting divorced is about 75%

Maybe I don't want to visit Australia anymore :s

8. The women of the Tiwi tribe in the South Pacific are married at birth

Saves on some hard to make decisions later.

9. It is illegal to be a prostitute in Siena, Italy, if your name is Mary

Maria, Matre de Isus

10. In parts of Malaya, the women keep harems of men

Gross me out

11. The two highest IQ’s ever recorded (on a standard test) both belong to women

Not at all surprised

12. In Kenya where 38% of the farms are run by women, those women manage to harvest the same amount per hectare (2.47 acres) as men, despite men having greater access to loans, advice, fertilizers, hybrid seeds, insecticides. And when women were given the same level of help, they were found to be more efficient than men, and produced bigger harvests

I have friends in Kenya that have confirmed similar stats in most fields there.

13. Over half a million women die in childbirth every year in Africa and Asia

Very sad, but not too surprising considering the disadvantages in medical facilities, knowledge, etc..

14. Nearly 1/2 of all Indonesian women have had their first child by the time they are 17

USA is trying to catch them...

15. In the USA, unintended pregnancies account for almost half of all pregnancies

Funny how that happens...

16. According to The World Health Org., 40 per cent of girls aged 17 or under in South Africa are reported to have been the victim of rape or attempted rape

Very sad indeed

17. In Sweden, 76% of mothers work, the highest percentage in the developed world

Yes, Sweden is a very liberal country in the social realm

18. Australia, New Zealand and the US are among a handful of governments that do not require women to be paid some form of maternity leave. In countries as diverse as Russia, Colombia, Laos and Morocco, the government foots the entire bill for three to six months of maternity leave

Capitalism vs Socialism ^^^

19. By age 55, 95% of all U.S. women have married

The least surprising fact on this list for me

20. In 2007 the world’s richest self-made woman was Ms Zhang Yin, a Chinese paper recycling entrepreneur

She thought green...

21. Only 5% of Hollywood feature films are directed by women

Is that why most Hollywood movies are so lousy?

22. Today, Japan leads the world in condom use. Like cosmetics, they’re sold door to door, by women

Don't they also lead the world in under age sex and child prostitution?

23. Seventy percent of women would rather have chocolate than sex (Poll taken in a 1995 women’s magazine)

Heard that before... but they haven't met me yet either.

24. Australian women have sex on the first date more than women the same age in the USA and Canada

After watching one episode of Paradise Island I can agree with that quite easily. (on second thought maybe I do still want to visit Australia)

25. China is considered the next big marketing opportunity for the tobacco industry because only 3.8% of Chinese women smoke, compared with 63 % of adult males

Quite a differential there.

/yawn anyone that has to do with a survey I am disregarding. Survey's are not accurate enough as people can easily taint results by lying. While only one openly said it was by survey I am sure others worked the same way. Sorry but surveys just aren't reliable.

When was the last time this law has actually been enforced? It is probably like the old British laws that no one has been bothered to amend (like the law that gives pregnant women the right to use a policeman's hat as a toilet)

Considering how easy it is for women to get money from their former husbands, even extra on top of a pre-nup, I am just waiting for this to happen in England.

Damn! America is lucky people dont use contraceptives, or if they do that they are not 100% effective. The day there are there will be a population crisis.

No wai!

Sorry, couldn't help it. What I mean is 'unkown' or 'uncommon' facts about men, such as it's perfectly normal to have a non-straight penis. That sort of stuff.

When it comes to statistics on a gender divide, it's pretty much a given that the larger percentage is going to be men. Unless we're talking about pregnancies, in which case it is significantly smaller

I love how text carries a tone of patronisation with it

1. Men like to barbecue. Men will cook if danger is involved.

2. Men who have pierced ears are better prepared for marriage. They've experienced pain and bought jewelry.

3. If you buy your husband or boyfriend a video camera, for the first few weeks he has it, lock the door when you go to the bathroom. Most of my husband's early films end with a scream and a flush.

4. Be careful of men who are bald and rich; the arrogance of "rich" usually cancels out the "nice" of bald.

5. Marrying a divorced man is ecologically responsible. In a world where there are more women than men, it pays to recycle.

6. Men are very confident people. My husband is so confident that when he watches sports on television, he thinks that if he concentrates really hard, he can help his team. If his team is in trouble, he coaches the players from the living room. If they are really in trouble, I have to get off the phone in case they call him.

7. If it's attention you want, don't get involved with a man during play-off season.

8. Men like phones with lots of buttons. It makes them feel important.

9. Men love to be the first to read the newspaper in the morning. Not being the first is upsetting to their psyches.

10. All men look nerdy in black socks and sandals.

11. The way a man looks at himself in the mirror will tell you if he can ever care about anyone else.

12. Don't try to teach men how to do anything in public. They can learn in private; in public they have to KNOW.

13. Men who are going bald often wear baseball caps.

14. All men are afraid of eyelash curlers. I sleep with one under my pillow instead of a gun.

15. A good place to meet a man is at the dry cleaner. These men usually have jobs and bathe.

16. Men love watches with multiple functions. My husband has one that is a combination address book, telescope and piano.

17. All men hate to hear "We need to talk." No matter what the subject is, these seven words strike fear in the heart of even General Norman Schwarzkopf.

18. Men are sensitive in strange ways. If a man has built a fire and the last log doesn't burn, he will take it personally.

19. Men are brave enough to go to war, but they are not brave enough to get a bikini wax.

20. All men think they're nice guys. Some of them are not. Contact me for a list of names.

21. Men do not get cellulite. Another point for g-d possibly being a man.

22. Men have an easier time shopping for a bathing suit. Women have two types: Depressing and More depressing! Men have two types: Nerdy and Not Nerdy.

23. Men have higher body temperatures than women. If your heating goes out in the winter, I recommend sleeping next to a man. Men are like portable heaters that snore.

24. Women take clothing much more seriously than men. I've never seen a man walk into a party and say "Oh, my g-d, I'm so embarrassed. There's another man wearing a black tuxedo!"

25. Most men hate to shop. That is why the men's department is usually on the first floor of a department store, two inches from the door.

26. If a man prepares dinner for you and the salad contains three or more types of lettuce, he is serious.

27. If you are dating a man who you think might be Mr. Right if he only: a) got older b) got a new job or c) visited a psychiatrist, you are in for a rude awakening. The cocoon-to-butterfly theory only works on cocoons and butterflies.

28. Men own basketball teams. Every year cheerleaders' outfits get tighter and briefer, and players' shorts get looser, baggier and longer.

29. No man is charming all of the time. Even Cary Grant is on record saying he wished he could be Cary Grant.

30. When four or more men get together, they talk about sports.

31. When four or more women get together, they talk about men.

32. Not one man in a beer commercial has a beer belly.

33. Men are less sentimental than women. No man has ever seen the movie The Way We Were twice, voluntarily.

34. Most women are introspective. "Am I In Love? Am I emotionally and creatively fulfilled?" Most men are outrospective: "Did my team win? How's my car?"

35. If a man says "I'll call you," and he doesn't, he didn't FORGET... he didn't LOSE your number... he didn't DIE! He just didn't want to call you.

36. Men hate to lose. I once beat my husband at tennis. I asked him, "Are we going to have sex again?" He said, "Yes. But not with each other."

37. Men who can eat anything they want and not gain weight should do it out of the sight of women.

38. Getting rid of a man without hurting his masculinity is a problem. "Get out" and "I never want to see you again" might sound like a challenge. If you want to get rid of a man, I suggest saying "I love you... I want to marry you... I want to have your children." Sometimes they leave skid marks.

39. Men accept compliments much better than women do. Example: "Mitch, you look great." Mitch: "Thanks." On the other side, "Ruth, you look great." Ruth: "I do? Must be the lighting."

40. Impulse buying is not macho. Men rarely call the Home Shopping Network.

41. Men who listen to classical music tend not to spit.

42. Only men who have worn a ski suit understand how complicated it is for a woman to go to the bathroom when she's wearing a jumpsuit.

43. Men don't feel the urge to get married as quickly as women do because their clothes all button and zip in the front. Women's dresses usually button and zip in the back. We need men emotionally and sexually, but we also need men to help us get dressed.

44. Men are self-confident because they grow up identifying with superheroes. Women have bad self images because they grow up identifying with Barbie.

45. When a woman tries on clothing from her closet that feels tight, she will assume she has gained weight. When a man tries something from his closet that feels tight, he will assume his clothing has shrunk.

46. Male menopause is a lot more fun than female menopause. With female menopause you gain weight and get hot flashes. Male menopause: you get to date young girls and drive motorcycles.

47. Men forget everything. Women remember everything.

48. That's why men need instant replays in sports. They've already forgotten what happened.

49. Men would like monogamy better if it sounded less like monotony.

50. All men would still really like to own a train set.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Not quite serious, but....

32. Not one man in a beer commercial has a beer belly

not true - one of my personal favorite beer commercials - Miller's "twist to open" series of circa mid 90s... fat bald guy in a white undershirt trying to do the twist (dance) to open his bottle of beer.... there are many beer commercials with overweight people, usually the Miller and Bud Lite ones that are intended to amuse.

I bought a red Corvette for my mid-life crisis.

If four women go out to lunch they will scrutinize the check and figure out who owes what.
If four men go out to lunch each will throw a twenty on the table, even though the bill comes to only $23.95
